Abingdon Episcopal Church
Gloucester,Virginia
The History
The current building was constructed in 1755 and is said to have replaced an ealier building that had been there since the mid 17th century. The Church is also said to have been planned by Sir Christopher Wren,a well known architect. It was built in the form of a Greek cross.
The box pews from inside the Church were used by the British as box stalls for horses during the Revolutionary War.During the Civil War the Church was occupied by Union soldiers for a brief time.
The beautiful courtyard of the Church is the final resting place of many of Gloucester's oldest and most famous families.
The Stories
The sinlge story I have found concerning Abingdon is a tale that supposedly took place during the Civil War.A lone Federal cavalryman was returning to his post at Gloucester Point one night. It was during a storm and he was looking for shelter and a place where he would be safe from Confederate soldiers. He came upon Abingdon Church and went inside to wait the storm out but with every flash of lightning he could see something moving in the north gallery. It appeared to be coming down the stairway. When he finally got a good look it appeared to be a white, filmy human looking apparition. The soldier jumped on his horse and raced back out into the storm .The legend continues that the next flash of lightning revealed two riders on the horses back.
I look at this ghostly tale as exactly that,a tale. But non-the-less it was enough of a reason for us to check out Abingdon and see what we might find.

The Investigation
Our first visit to Abingdon was on July 5th,2003.This night the temperatures were in the low 70's and the humidity was at 65%.There was no rain or fog in the area .We arrived just before nine in the evening. There were three investigators present. We took photos of the area using a 35mm camera and 800 speed Kodak film.We also did some audio recording.
Upon review we found we had gotten atleast 1 EVP and 1 photo of a small bluish orb.The orb photo was obtained in an area where two of the investigators felt a strong sense of "somthing" there.
Our second trip to Abingdon was July 19th,2003.Again the temperature was in the low 70's and the humidity was at 76%.There was no rain or fog in the area.We got to Abingdon at about 9:30pm.There were two investigators present. We took photos using a 35mm camera and 800 speed film and also did audio recording with two different tape recorders. This visit produced no further evidence.
