Since the early 1600's Yorktown was one of the most popular ports in the colonies mainly due to the fact that the York River is one of the deepest natural channels in the world.This provided easy access for the many ships carrying merchandise to the New World.And also for the ships bringing slaves.History tells us they were brought over on overcrowded ships on which they were kept chained together,given not nearly enough food and water and kept in unsanitary conditions.Many perished during the voyage.

Those who did survive were often sick and weak by the time they reached Yorktown.The slaves would be unloaded and many were sold on the spot but the rest were led up Great Valley Rd. to be transported to other towns to be sold.

These men and women were still chained together when they took their first walk in the new land and if they were too weak or they fell they would be beaten,sometimes to death, by their captors.

I have never been able to find out where the name for this road came from or when it recieved it.

Residents and visitors to Yorktown have been telling stories of unexplained noises on Great Valley Rd. for hundreds of years.They tell of hearing chains rattling,the cracking of whips,moans and sobs.Many people,even those who are unaware of the history of this stretch of ground tell of an overwhelming feeling of sadness while traveling it.

H.R.P.R.G. has visited Great Valley Rd. several times throughout the last five years so I will not go into specific details of each visit.We have found a tremendous amount of activity at this site.We have gotten photos of unexplained mists using 35mm cameras loaded with 800 speed Kodak film.We have recorded several EVP's including some where a male seems to be commenting to someone else about things said by one of our investigators.We also have a video which was recorded using a Sony 8mm camcorder with nightshot of an unexplained smokey mist moving in front of the camera.

We have also experienced many things which cannot be documented including hearing footsteps following us,seeing orbs with the naked eye and watching a single branch in a tree shaking violently while there was no wind and no other trees or branches being affected.We have also picked up many anomalous readings with EMF detectors and cold spots using a digital thermal scanner.
