This Prentis House, built around 1800, is one of the oldest houses still standing in Suffolk. Originally the home of the Prentis family in later years it was used as a boarding house before falling into disrepair. The city was prepared to tear down the house until a private contractor purchased the home and renovated it. The building now serves as Suffolk's Visitor's Center and the Department of Tourism office.

Strange things began happening in the house from the time the renovation began. Workers would hear the sound of doors slamming though all of the doors had been removed from the house. A general feeling of not being alone or just an uneasiness became commonplace to the workers. After the renovations were completed and the Tourism department moved into the building the experiences continued. Employees would often hear someone on the top floor of the building when no one was up there. Some of them also claimed to have seen an older man sitting in a chair on the second floor. One employee in particular was quite skeptical of the stories the others would tell however, she admitted to experiences of her own that she could not explain away. She would often bring her dog to work with her and the dog would sit in the floor beside her desk as she went about her work. Occasionally, the dog would begin to growl and bark at "something". This was not a normal behavior for the animal. One night when she was working late alone she turned on the city council meeting on the television which is on the second floor. Since her office is on the third floor she turned the volume up as loud as it would go so she could hear and sat the remote control on top of the television. As she was working she heard the sound from the televsion suddenly stop followed by a loud "thump" on the floor. When she went to check it out she found that the televsion volume had been turned down and the remote control was in the floor between two chairs that sit about five feet away from the television. Much too far for it to have simply fell from the vibraton of the volume being up so high.

Our first visit to the Prentis House was on Jaunary 12th, 2008. The outside temperature was in the mid 40's and the humidity was around 60%. Skies were clear. We were excited to be there and to be the first team to have an oppourtunity to investigate this building. We hoped to be able to find some answers for the employees there but we never expected what we found. We first looked for high EMF fields. We thought that maybe since the office rooms are somewhat small and there is alot of computer equipment in them that the employees may be experiencing sesitivity to the fields. That wasn't the case. A scan of the entire building didn't turn up any unusually high EMF fields. During the night our investigators had a couple of personal experiences. One investigator was in an office on the third floor when he felt something hit his leg followed by the sound of something hitting the floor. We were not able to locate anything out of place or find what anything in the floor that it could have been. Several investigators also had an uneasy feeling on the top floor. It was when we began reviewing the evidence that we realized how much activity there was at this location. In our ten years we have never gotten so many EVP's during a single investigation. We also caught something on video that we can't explain. It seems to be a whisp of smoke that goes behind a door on the thrid floor and re-emerges.
